So, Aristophanes was clearly feeling smarmy and might have been on some sort of linguistic high when he coined this term in his comedy Assemblywomen (circa 392 BC). Not only is it the longest word EVER to appear in literature, it refers to something that seriously did not need such elaboration. it refers to a food dish (fictional, mind you) consisting of a combination of meat, fish, flesh and other ‘dainties.’ Should I ever open a restaurant this is going on my menu, mainly for my amusement as people try to get over the initial brain-panic.
